Slammerkin by Emma Donoghue and a great selection of related books, art and collectibles available now at johnsonout.com This book is based on a real person, Mary Saunders. There is apparently very little information about her, so this novel is the author's attempt to create a life for her. Emma Donaghue did an excellent job. I found myself really hoping Mary would rise above her beginnings and do well for herself. I did find this book very difficult to put down%(83).

A personal note: Slammerkin began as one of the stories for the collection I would go on to publish as The Woman Who Gave Birth to Rabbits, but I soon realized that it would take the length of a novel to figure out why this murder happened back in The work I was doing for my PhD on eighteenth-century fiction really helped, giving the novel a fiercely revisionist take on gender, class and race.

Book Summary Slammerkin: A loose gown; a loose woman. Born to rough cloth in Hogarth's London, but longing for silk, Mary Saunders's eye for a shiny red ribbon leads her to prostitution at a young age.

This boldly imagined historical fiction—reminiscent, though by no means imitative, of both Defoe’s classic Moll Flanders and Margaret Atwood’s recent Alias Grace—represents a quantum leap forward for its Irish-born (now Canadian) author.

The antiheroine and protagonist is Mary Saunders, a young woman whose ingenuous lust for “fine clothing” (e.g., the “slammerkin,” which. Fiction Book Review: SLAMMERKIN by Emma Donoghue, Author.
